Will Howard Stern Move to iTunes? Even the Rumor Underscores Apple’s Media Clout

By Erik Sherman | December 3, 2010
An explosive rumor has just hit: shock-jock Howard Stern might pack his bags and leave Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) to sign a $600 million deal with Apple (AAPL).

An explosive rumor has just hit: shock-jock Howard Stern might pack his bags and leave Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) to sign a $600 million deal with Apple (AAPL).

Given that Stern in negotiations with Sirius about renewing his previous multi-year $500 million contract, it wouldn’t be surprising if his own people had started it as a negotiation tactic, or general publicity. But even if the rumor isn’t true (and I don’t think it is), the idea that Apple could hire Stern demands serious thought — and that shows how precarious the media industry’s position is.

Stern’s leaving isn’t out of the question. In September, he said it was “pretty sure” that he’d leave the satellite radio company. He previously made the hop from terrestrial radio to satellite, so a jump to yet another new medium is believable. And there is that niggling issue of Sirius having no news about Stern’s contract talks.

Sirius' Stock Surges On Howard Stern Deal
Agustino Fontevecchia, 12.09.10, 11:51 AM EST

Shock Jock Howard Stern agreed to stay on air with Sirius XM for five more years for an undisclosed amount.
The drama is over for Sirius XM, as star personality Howard Stern announced he had reached a "fair deal" to stay with the satellite radio company for an additional five years. The announcement caused a spike in Sirius' stock price through the early hours of Thursday's session.

Sirius XM ( SIRI - news - people ), the satellite radio company, had been in long negotiations with its star "shock jock" Howard Stern over the renewal of his contract. Stern, who came on in 2005 with a five-year $500 million dollar contract, had told his listeners he would not be "taking a f-ing paycut," claiming he was "bigger" than Sirius' prior target, Oprah.

Howard Stern Signs New Five-Year Contract With SIRIUS XM
Agreement Includes Rights for SIRIUS XM to Transmit Howard Stern's Programming to Mobile Devices

NEW YORK, Dec. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Howard Stern and SIRIUS XM Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI) today announced a new five-year agreement. The news was first reported by Howard during his show this morning.

"On my first day in satellite radio SIRIUS had approximately 600,000 subscribers. Today, the two companies have 20 million; and, in my view, we have just scratched the surface of how many people will get on board," said Howard Stern. "I am especially excited that my show will now be heard through SIRIUS XM on mobile devices. Access to my show on mobile devices will open up additional opportunities for my fans to hear me wherever they are."

"Howard is a great talent and we are thrilled that he will continue to provoke, engage and entertain on SIRIUS XM. Our agreement is good news on all fronts — it is good for SIRIUS XM subscribers and good for SIRIUS XM stockholders. Howard forever changed radio and was instrumental in putting SIRIUS on the map when he first launched on satellite radio. He is one of the few 'one-name' entertainers in the country and our 20 million subscribers are lucky to have him," said Mel Karmazin, Chief Executive Officer, SIRIUS XM.

The world-renowned Stern is credited with revolutionizing the talk radio format. Known for his large and extremely loyal fan base and for his unequalled ability to migrate fans to other media, Stern has embarked on numerous highly successful ventures over the years. Stern has written two best-selling books — Private Parts, which was Simon & Schuster's fastest-selling book ever, and Miss America, the fastest-selling book in publishing history. He later starred in the highly successful motion picture adaptation of Private Parts, orchestrated one of the fastest-selling soundtracks in motion picture history and has starred in one of the most watched entertainment pay-per-view special of all time.

Howard's new contract will run through December 31, 2015. Under the terms of the new contract, SIRIUS XM will now have the right to transmit Howard's exclusive programming to mobile devices. Additional terms of the contract will not be disclosed.

Howard Stern suing Sirius XM
Commentary: Suit is over alleged failure to pay stock awards

By MarketWatch
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — This is the last thing Sirius XM Radio Inc. needs.

After suffering financial problems over the years and fielding persistent questions about its growth, now the radio operation has to contend with a lawsuit by its biggest star, Howard Stern.

According to media reports, Stern claims that Sirius (SIRI 1.66, -0.05, -2.64%) failed to pay stock awards that are due for helping the company surpass its subscriber growth targets and advance from second place to become the preeminent satellite radio entity in the United States.

Stern va surement arriver à trouver un nom plus méchant que Pig Vomit pour son employeur actuel si ça ne s'arrange pas rapidement!
